DIY Modern Window Divider

Creating a DIY modern window divider for our kids’ bathroom has been on our to-do list for a while! After finally completing our office project, we were ready to sneak in this kids’ bathroom refresh! We have always loved the look of black metal welded windows, doors and dividers. They have a clean modern feel and we have similar accents in other areas of our home. We wanted to get the same look for less by using wood. Using wood for the frame would help keep the project within our budget and allow us to get it done quickly!

The window divider was made very similar to a glass cabinet door, using mortise and tenon joinery. The specific joinery we used is a very strong joint called an “offset mortise and tenon”. You can see the difference when compared to a typical mortise and tenon joint. The offset is needed to allow for a rabbet (or notch) on the back of the panel that holds the glass.

It is funny how almost all DIY projects involve painting! Being this is a smaller project, I decided to use my HVLP sprayer! This is a great sprayer for getting into smaller spaces. It is also an easy sprayer to clean. If you are having a hard time deciding on a sprayer, I wrote a helpful guide to choosing the right paint sprayer. I decided to hang the window frame from the ceiling so I could spray each side at the same time.

Once the paint was dry, we installed the frame by fastening it to the wall and ceiling. The final step was to install the glass, which was held in place using some small pieces of wood strips pin nailed in place. The glass is tempered glass. In many areas, tempered glass is required by code in bathrooms. Tempered glass is much stronger and if it breaks it shatters into small pieces that are not sharp to prevent injuries.
