How To Choose The Right Paint Sprayer

If you are about to paint your next DIY project, you might be wondering how to choose the right paint sprayer for the job. There are so many great options for paint sprayers available on the market and it can be a bit difficult to navigate. Choosing the right paint sprayer depends on the size of the project, type of paint and your comfort level.

I have used various types of sprayers over the years. Some of the techniques when using a paint sprayer are the same, but the method in which the paint is stored and sprayed are very different. Here are a few basic types of sprayers and some pros and cons of each.

Choosing the right paint sprayer

Airless Paint Sprayer

This is my typical go to sprayer. It uses an electric pump to pressurize the paint. It works great for larger jobs like interior trim, cabinets, painting houses, fences and sheds because the long hose and paint reservoir is basically the paint can! This Wagner Airless Control Pro Sprayer is a great price and is my favorite sprayer. An airless sprayer like this will yield the most professional results but there is a bit of a learning curve with setting up the sprayer and spray technique.

Pro

  • Great for large projects
  • Professional results
  • Sprays numerous types of product (thick or thin)

Con

  • Longer set up time
  • Longer clean up
  • Takes some getting used to spraying

Handheld Electric Sprayers

These handheld electric sprayers have come a long way over the years. I have used this Flexio Paint Sprayer and have had good results. It is great because clean up is easy with the small reservoir of paint. There is also no long hose to lug around and clean. I would use this sprayer on an outdoor shed, fence and small indoor projects. If you are new to spraying, this is a great option. I highly recomend this sprayer.

Pro

  • Easy to clean
  • Less set up time
  • Uses less paint
  • East to use

Con

  • Small paint reservoir
  • Only for small jobs
  • May have issues with thicker paints

HVLP Sprayers ( High Volume Low Pressure)

HVLP Sprayers are great for lighter, thinner paints and lacquers for smaller projects. I own a HVLP Gun, but it is my least favorite and least versatile. Many people often use a gun like this for spraying stain on a deck or applying clear coats for a smooth, fine finish.

Pro

  • Professional results on clear coats
  • Less clean up
  • fairly easy to use

Con

  • Small paint reservoir
  • Only sprays thin products
  • short air hose

How To Choose the Right Paint Sprayer

  • How big is the project? If it is large and using a thicker paint I would definitely recommend the Airless Sprayer
  • What type of paint am I going to be using?
  • What types of projects do I do most often?
  • What is my budget? The handheld electric sprayers are a great value!
