DIY Modern Wood Planters
We love how these DIY Modern Wood Planters completely transformed the front view of our house. While searching for wood planter boxes, we instantly fell in love with these square planters from Rejuvenation. We needed 3 planters to go on each side of our garage doors, so the total price to purchase all of them was outside of our budget for this area.
The original planters used teak wood, which can add to the price. We found some amazing cedar fence pickets at a great price to use as the wood accents! Cedar is a great material to use outdoors as it naturally repels water.
This view is what caught our attention! We just love how these modern wood planters look on each side of the garage doors! I could not believe that we were able to recreate this view for a fraction of a price! We also feel this is a great beginner DIY similar to our Vintage Inspired Skinny Bench.
How We Built these DIY Modern Wood Planters!
We started building the wood planters by cutting all the parts! The 4 planter legs are made from 2×4 material cut down in width. If you don’t have a table saw you can also use 2×2 material which is already cut down.
The main “box” of the planter boxes were made from 3/8″ thick exterior plywood. This is great because it’s a light material that is easy to handle. You can easily cut the parts using a circular saw or jig saw! If you are looking for a circular set and jig saw I highly recommend this set from Hart Tools. I also have the brushless jig saw and it works great!
We wanted to make these DIY Modern Wood Planters easy for everyone to make, so we have the full cut list and premium plans available at our store!
The planter box really comes together easily using wood glue, nail gun or a staple gun! Once the box was assembled, we painted it with 2 coats of good quality exterior paint! It’s really important to paint the inside and outside to protect the wood from water. We also drilled holes in the bottom to allow for water drainage.
The cedar fence pickets really bring in a modern element to this wooden planter. The fence pickets are about 1/2″ thick and look perfect when cut to size! Typical cedar boards are much more expensive and thicker. In this situation, the thin boards work and look much better for this DIY Planter. We also sealed the boards before nailing them to the planter box.
We are looking forward to decorating these DIY Modern Wood Planters all year long! Fall is right around the corner and we can’t wait to see some fun Mums filling them up!
