Building a narrow wood bench is much easier than you would imagine. There are a few tricks to make this Vintage Inspired Skinny Bench look as amazing as the ones selling for big bucks online. We will outline them in the steps below and don’t forget to sigh up for the free narrow wood bench plans below.

Step 1 – Cut the Top Seat

Cut the top seat of the vintage bench with a miter saw. save the scrap for the legs.

Step 2- Cut the legs

Cut the legs by using a table saw to rip down the remaining part of the 2x6x8. If you don’t have a tables saw you can use a 2x2x8. It just cost a few extra dollars to build this narrow rustic bench. Once you have them cut to length cut the angles on a miter saw.

Pocket Screw locations for DIY Rustic Skinny Bench

Step 3 – Pocket screw and Assemble

Drill pocket holes in the locations that are not visible. We are just using the 1-1/2″ long pocket screws at the typical setting for 3/4. Now you are ready to assemble this DIY Rustic Skinny Bench.

Step 4 – Time to make this Vintage Inspired Skinny Bench look old

We used a handsaw to round the edges and cut some large cracks/chunks out of the wood bench parts. We used the blade like a scraper to make some mill lines that resembled rough sawn lumber. You can also use a wire brush wheel to really dig into the wood bench! We used a large screw and hit it with a hammer on its side to make more character markings. Spread some dirt, lightly apply stain, and add a matt clear coat to finish your DIY Rustic Skinny Bench.

  1. Dan, what angle at the top and bottom of the legs did you cut them, to make them flush with the floor? 45 degrees? Sorry I am a true beginner 🫣

  2. I love this bench but am struggling to make the edges of the pine look like yours – i have a pull saw and knicked it up with some screws/nails/etc but it still looks pretty rectangular. Would love if you would show a video of how you used the pull saw to take off chunks of wood and make it look more like driftwood. That would be amazing. I’ve tried pulling up videos on Youtube and am not finding what I’m looking for.

    1. Hi Lauren! We are so glad you are building the bench! We basically cut the corners holding the saw at an angle taking large chucks out. You can also use a reciprecating saw as well to speed things up!
