Materials Needed for Faux Concrete Fireplace:
- 1/2″ Durock cement board
- 1-5/8″ cement board screws
- Ardex feather finish. (We have the best luck on amazon)
- Metal drywall corner bead
- Mesh cement board joint tape
- Black aluminum Schlueter trim for around fireplace
The Right Tools For DIY faux concrete fireplace:
- Screw gun
- Cement board cutting tool
- Drill ( for mixing the Ardex)
- 5 gallon buckets
- Paddle mixer for drill
- Drywall knife
- Mud Pan
- Tile Sponge
Step 1 – Prepare the surface
Screw the cement board onto the wood framing. It’s best to run the sheets horizontally and stagger the joints. Cement board is cut with a special cutting knife similar to drywall. The metal Schlueter is placed on the cut ends around the fireplace to give it a clean look. After the cement board is applied proceed to screw metal corner beads on the corners.
Step 2 – Apply Joint Tape
Apply mesh joint tape to all the joints and apply a thin later of Ardex feather finish over the tape. This will prevent the joints from cracking. Let this dry for 24 hours.
Step 3 – Apply Feather Finish
Mix a full bucket of feather finish using the paddle mixer, and follow the instructions on the bag. Pour or scoop concrete into the drywall mud pan and start spreading on the wall. This product will dry very quickly, so it’s best to move fast. I keep a bucket of water and a large sponge close by. Use the damp sponge to gently wipe the surface to help keep the concrete wet while working. This is also a great way to smooth out the concrete.
We were able to get it all done in one coat but don’t be scared to apply another coat of feather finish if needed!
If you are building a new home or looking to upgrade your current fireplace this faux feather finish is a great option. Once you master using Ardex Feather Finish you will be ready for a DIY white concrete countertop project!
