Modern Wood Christmas Tree Tutorial

Its starting to look a lot like Christmas over here! I absolutely fell in love with these modern wood Christmas tree from Crate and Barrel. I knew we needed to make a simple cost effective option so we could sprinkle these wood trees around the house for the holidays. They are perfect as table decor or a fun accent on your mantle. This modern wood Christmas tree is so easy to make with some simple tools. We used a table-saw, but you can easily make this with a circular saw or handsaw! The wood Christmas tree is made from 1/2″ birch plywood.(you could use any plywood) The great thing about plywood is that it easily can be found at local big box stores, in many different sizes. We used a 4’x8′ sheet because we were making a bunch of trees, but you can typically find 4’x4′ sheets or 2’x4′ sheets as well.

Steps

Start by cutting 2 rectangles from the 1/2″ plywood sheet. For the 18″ tall version and the 15″ tall version follow the dimensions below on our plans below or custom make your height and width to fit your space.

Use a straight edge to draw lines from the bottom corners to the center of the top. This will make the triangle tree shape. Do this on both pieces of plywood.

How to cut modern wood Christmas tree

Measure from the bottom to the center of each piece. This is how far the slot will be cut. Use a straight edge and square to draw the lines for the 1/2″ slot. One slot will be at the bottom of the Modern Wood Christmas Tree and the other part will have a slot at the top of the Christmas tree. Cut the slot first using a table-saw or circular saw. Use a jigsaw or coping saw to cut finish cutting the small 1/2″ side of the slot.

* It is much easier to cut the 1/2″ slots first before cutting the “triangle/tree” shape. It will also reduce chipping when the sides of the tree*

Plywood for Modern Wood Christmas Tree

Use a table saw or circular saw to cut the lines to make the triangle tree shape. Once the parts are cut sand the faces and edges with a sander or sand paper. Round over the edges little to give it a finished look.
